About Sojourner Soap
Sojourner Soap is true soap. Handmade in small batches using the cold process method it is created with oils, liquid & lye. The process today is much more precise than the lye soap Great-Grandma (maybe Great-Great-Grandma) used to make. We also have available to us many more good-for-your-skin oil choices.
Once the lye and oils are correctly mixed it starts a process we call saponification. This changes the lye and the oil into soap! Once this process is complete there is no lye left over in the bar of soap. Glycerin, a humectant, is produced during this process. It attracts moisture to your skin. This is one reason handmade soap leaves your clean skin feeling so comfortable. True soap gently cleanses the skin without stripping its natural oils. It is gentle on sensitive skin and great for tough, hard-working hands as well. Use it daily - it does lather up very sudsy on a shower pouf. You will enjoy the difference true soap makes! |
What is Sojourner Soap made of?
I use various combinations of all natural oils like olive oil, coconut oil, rice bran oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, sweet almond oil, lard, tallow and palm oil. Butters like shea, mango & cocoa butter add a luxurious quality to soap. Using several kinds of oils & butters helps to create bars that are cleansing without drying the skin. Some of my oils are infused with herbs like chamomile, calendula & lavender. You may see some small flecks of these herbs in your soap bar.
Many of my soap bars also contain mineral colorants and clays. (I don't use any colorants that contain dyes or aluminum.) Aloe juice is often used for an added luxurious feel. And, some soaps are made with milk - good for your skin. Other additives that bring great qualities to a bar of soap include coffee, honey, finely ground oatmeal, vegetable powders, flax seed powder and silk fiber.
My soaps are scented with carefully selected, high quality, skin-safe fragrance oils (always phthalate free) or pure essential oils or a combination of both. Bars are hand cut and wrapped in an attractive paper wrapper with the list of ingredients printed on the back so that you can know what you are using on your skin.

Getting the Most out of your Bar of Soap:
While each bar is at least 4 oz. (many are closer to 5 oz.) the label always reads 4 oz. It has been cured for at least 4 weeks to ensure a hard yet mild bar. Your soap bar will last longest when it is kept as dry as possible between uses. It is best to place it in a soap dish that has a raised area for the soap to sit on so that it can drain and dry. The underside of your bar of soap will soften if left sitting on a flat sink surface or in a puddle of water. Store your soap in the paper wrapper as it is until you are ready to begin using it.
If you have a family and a high traffic bathroom a good option is to have 2 bars of soap on hand. When one gets a little soft use the second bar and set the soft one aside until it dries out again.
Use it as a hand soap or in the shower. It lathers up very sudsy on a shower pouf. I hope you enjoy the clean and comfortable feeling of handcrafted soap.
